I don't mean to sound contrary to everyone else, but I don't believe that it's a love song... or not SO much a love song. He might be in love with whomever the song is addressed to, but that's not really important.
I think:
Yorn is talking about his experiences, "A day in prison" got him thinking about his life. (Prison could be anything that held him back and gave him pause. A bad job, relationship, etc.) "It's got me out of my head"/"a strange condition" to reflect on himself, to be thinking about his life while in "prison." Basically, yorn feels weird about it.
-Let me finish his thought: "I want you to know (what I think about this life)". i.e. "Stories and cigarettes... girls," and "You're the best... place," are lines about how he sees other people/the place he lives.
The refrences yorn makes to wages and letters (and others) is more symbolical. It's more a "give me what I'm due" sort of thing. She owes him something emotionally, perhaps.
And that's pretty much it. I hope I wrote understandably. I have a habit of using really weird sentence structures, etc.
I might be all wrong, anyway. That's just what I thought.
Peace.
