One line that could be interpreted as 'goodbye sex' doesn't sell me.
I think the song is more about a girl whom the speaker loves, but runs in to a barrier with her. She either isn't interested enough, or has personal reasons keeping her from saying OK. He is saying that he will always love her, no matter what she does, or where she goes, and with who, although he seems to feel some regret that he can't shake the feeling. ("How does it feel to know you never have to be alone / When you get home") He says it almost sarcastically. He tries to lie to himself while she's gone; that he doesn't feel this way. ("Dream away everyday / Try so hard to disregard / The rhythm of the rain that drops / And coincides with the beating of my heart")
To address the lines "Pushing forward and arching back / Bring me closer to heart attack":
I think, taking the whole stanza in to account, that she is pushing him to move on while he is reluctant to go, and angry that she wants him to. She is pushing him forward from behind, and he is leaning back, arching his back trying to get some leverage to resist. He's panicking (the heart attack) and then finally, he says "Say goodbye and just fly away / When you come back / I have some things to say" so that he won't have to move on because he won't obstruct her next move at all. He makes an effort to give her a clear conscience.
I hate to disagree with ya but I definitely think its about goodbye sex. Theres more than one line that shows that. What about the line "there must be some place near that only you and I can go/ so i can show you how i feel". Sex is the ultimate experience between two people that love eachother. He wants one more time before she leaves to share that. You say "She is pushing him forward from behind, and he is leaning back, arching his back trying to get some leverage to resist." but she is the one leaving. And...

And the wait until she gets back is hard which is why he dreams away everyday.
I agree with you about 99% yet there are a few things I've interpreted differently.

I agree that this song is about someone he loves and there is a barrier. I've actually just come to this same barrier in my relationship. She has an ex whom she thought she was over, but turns out she wasn't. There were no hard feelings between the two of us, I let her go because I knew that she wasn't ready and it's better to be honest with yourself than to deny it.

Therefore "How does it feel to know you'll never have to be...
Therefore "How does it feel to know you'll never have to be alone when you get home?" relates to the fact that, although this may be a breakup, she won't be alone, she has someone else's arms to fall into whereas he is truly alone. Her saying goodbye and flying away is going to be with the other.
Pushing forward and arching back, I can also relate to. We pushed forward and trudged on, even knowing that the feelings were unsteady, arching back is her saying "wait, but I'm just not over him." I actually thought this was a sexual song until my situation occurred, it just makes more sense. The heart attack is him just not knowing what to do and ultimately panicking.
As for "there must be someplace...." It's desperation. Let me take you somewhere that we can remove the outside disturbances and just be ourselves, whether it be sex or a discussion that ends with a cuddle.
I feel that this song in NO WAY relates to "goodbye sex." It may be a resultant, but that's not what it's about.
I gotta say that joker and austin cleared up a lot of this for me. I never really bought into the whole goodbye sex thing. A lot of people think the whole album is about sex sex sex but its not. Yes sum of the songs are about sex but u can't interpret all the songs that have words u don't quite understand to be about sex. I do agree that its about a struggle between lovers and I can relate to this becuz I also had sum of the same problems with my ex.
