On May 29th, 2004 at 10 a.m. City High will be holding its graduation ceremony at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. The Westboro Baptist Church, (the anti-everything church who is also host to the site www.godhatesfags.com) has made an announcement of their intentions to protest the graduation because a gay student will be awarded the Matthew Shepard Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is given annually to a gay student who achieves success in both academics and other activities. It is in memorial of Matthew Shepard, a U of Wyoming student who was killed for being homosexual. PLEASE SHOW UP AT THIS GRADUATION TO FACE THIS CHURCH AND LET THEM KNOW THAT THIS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. If you do not attend the actual graduation ceremony, please stand outside and confront the church and its supporters. I will NOT let this church and its negative opinions ruin this day for these seniors and their families. Carver Hawkeye arena is in Iowa City just a few blocks from Kinnick Stadium.
