to me, he seems to be beating himself up within the lyrics cause he cant get across what he is really trying to say "all these lines fall short of what i had in mind, a failed attempt to capsualize a feeling" i really admire that in a writer, that they can show that the situation has escaped them. It shows his humanity and therefore increases the emotive element in the song, in my opinion.
