its about him .... performing... people worshipping him in his concerts.... note the references to putting on his hair and face etc... the audience screaming when he opens his mouth etc.. i believe i heard him explain the meaning in an interview on tv when it was released.. sorry to spoil it for those that had other very valid interpretations... its what it means to him but of course can have various other associations for others.....

That is what I thought it was about initially, and I still do. It makes sense. Sometimes, people try to read too much into the lyrics of a song or poem. I have listened to it probably about 300 times

I looked into this because I thought I had read him saying something about Mardi Gras once, and found this: In an interview with Select magazine, vocalist and primary songwriter Robert Smith said: "I was thinking of Bourbon Street in New Orleans when I wrote it - I was getting ready to go there and I thought: what the fuck do I think I'm going to find ? It's about the incredulity that I could still be fooled into looking for a perfect moment."

That said, this song could definitely have a dual meaning. Both things make sense, esp....
