basically, this song is just about a relationship that went wrong, maybe because of a big fight. it goes without say that the relationship is doomed and there's no point in even trying to fix it (it's all implied / "you'll die trying to live this down. you might as well forget it.").
but he doesn't want to give up. he wants to give this one last try, because he doesn't want to be left wondering "what if we could have fixed it?" (still, i'm convinced that wondering what if is the worst thing there is).
so they're going to try again. they're going to take some time off to think about where they went wrong, to cool off their feelings, then try at it again.
