Cthulhu is the creation of H.P. Lovecraft and a group of other authors. He was the most well-known of a series of gods that features in short stories written by Lovecraft and his friends in the 20s/30s/40s.
Lovecraft also created the Necronomicon made popular by movies like Evil Dead; unfortunately, some weirdos take Cthulhu and the Necronomicon more seriously and act as if Lovecraft's stories are based on real Sumerian myths and a "real" Necronomicon. However, every single Necronomicon that has been found so far has been fake, and Cthulhu does not appear in ANY Sumerian or Babylonian myths whatsoever. If anybody ever mentions the Cthulhu mythos as real, punch them in the face for being so stupid.
But nevertheless, read the stories - they're great.
