I think you two have great points, but the statement about religion is this:
in eden, eating the apple was a symptom of a bigger problem, not obeying the rules, it didn't matter what the rule was or what surrounded it. The rules were broken because we believed someone OTHER THAN GOD.
With religion, you do not have god's word, you have a proxy that could have got it COMPLETLY wrong. Even if he or she got it right, you still haven't been told something by God himself. Therefore: "the true devil, religion" it's just another snake telling us lies
