I think it's the hope in the last verse, that there's all this sadness and unease and bitter nostalgia - then there's these sort of sweetly hopefull lines ("But 6 ft off the highway, our bare legs stung with wheat, we'll dig a hole and bury all we could not defeat") and they just break my heart.
