This reminds me of situation I'm in... You care about someone a lot and they say that they care about you too but then they start drifting away from you. They stop phoning you and talking to you. You still care about them and dont' want them to leave you even though inside you know that maybe it'd be better if it was like this. If you were separated. But you still want the person to once in awhile phone you and tell you what's going on with them. Yeah. I know that doesn't completely fit the song... but for the most part it does.
