I thought of this song in terms of the American Revolution, with the first verse relating to the Mayflower, rather than Columbus. "The boats came for us" would of course be the British. And--this is a stretch, I know--the part about the spirit being a lot like what it used to be back home could be a criticism of the way that the very intolerance that the pilgrims were fleeing has developed here, as well.

But actually, I really like the idea of it's being about the band's development. My only gripe with that is that I wouldn't consider them famous--the only people I know who have even heard of them are either friends from Tufts, or people I introduced to them!
