This is one of my favorites on KIT also. It kind of reminds me of "What You Wish For"--one of my favorites off L&GF--not just for the Wizard of Oz allusions, but in theme, too.
To me, they're both about realizing that you're in a bad situation--depression, living passively and missing out on a lot--and deciding to just do something about it. And you're really rooting for the narrator to succeed, even though I get the impression that in the past he's been all talk, no action.
I also love the line about turning on MTV with the volume off and they say it'll be OK: I think that's kind of a reminder that songs in general, can be about whatever you need them to be about.
