Having I think the same viewpoint in this situation, I beleive billy is trying to say he wants to be the one looking in. Like myself, becoming very independent, seemingly more than my peers, I dont need to be with many people, but much rather be the spy. To have them in my mind and life, but without them knowing it. You can learn a lot, if not the truth about people from observing them from afar, rather than the person they try to become when they know you, and your presence. Not saying I wanna be the physcho outside your bedroom door like Bundy, but just taking a step outside the 'box' and peeking in. What you can disover is pretty cool.
