I think this is a sort of pagan revenge-of-nature tale, with a bizarre twist. The narrator calls upon the Animal Powers and sacrifices himself to give them the power to take revenge. In the second half, it becomes clear that he's actually one of a group of people, and not alone.
A side note: "Hall-Up-High" is, I think, a literal translation of "Valhalla".
