I think the song is about his love dying...and he hasnt recovered.He grew into man after her death and became someone he believes she would be proud of. He has faith he´ll see her again one day up in heaven where she is....he says he´ll be coming home, but he´ll be late, it means he will meet her in heaven, but not anytime soon.
