I think that the the image of a crucifixion is just supposed to symbolize someone's suffering caused by someone else who's used them, not necessarily having any religious meaning to this instance.
A crucifixion wasn't anything special for Jesus, it was just a regular form of punishment at that time for the worst criminals as it was the most painful and torturing punishment they could think of. That's why I don't think it has to be religious, but that's just me...
