He also makes a referrence to the car in Schaffino so I think he actually drives this car. So I think he points out his own car to notify that it is he who wants to get away. Plus fuel is costly when you drive a V8 from 1956, so I think he is making the statement that the fuel is costly enough for friends to trade in.
