I also feel like it can be looked at two ways- On the more literal level, I agree with everything that's been already said.
But also feel like, he's sort of presenting himself to someone-- and asking them to excuse him if he's not all together. The line: "Whenever I see ya So please be kind if I'm a mess." Really fits in with that, don't you think? And the lines about being broken hearted kind of makes me think that he's not particularly happy with the way he is... Songs are great when you can look at them in different ways, eh?
