i thinkk it could be perhaps about a girlfriend of his and although he cares a lot for her, he knows it can't work for some reason or other and that's why he's telling her 'it's alright to be alone'. and i think the line 'we'll never be apart' is that even though they are not going to be together, they had something special and will always have a special connection thiing between them. just a gues, although i do like hollys interpretation of it!
