ok, "the water" is definitely symbolic. I think you guys are kind of missing it though. The water is how his life used to be, with a preacher as a father etc. A religous life. He crawled out into teh burning sunlight (like hell) into temptation for the worldly desires. He PRAYS for shade and rain, as in he still wants the comforts that gospel gives him, while enjoying the world of sin he wants to live. "I love to see the sun/in spite of all it's done" is great because the "bad" things he is doing don't inporve his life, but he loves to do them anyways.
