My opinion on this (great) song is that it's some guy speaking to a close friend who is wanting to commit suicide and is on the verge of doing it. He is trying to tell the friend how much he has meant to him throughout their lives and wants to know why he wants to just end his life and that hope may be lost but he shouldn't give in. In the end the friend does kill himself and leaves his friend to dwell over the death which occured infront of him.
