i think this song is either taking the piss out of how teenagers view love, how they think they're besotted with someone and get depressed as hell when they break up with them
or.....
it could be making the point that, although 'schoolgirl crushes' are thought of as pathetic, they're more than that: teenage years can be very traumatic as you try to find your path in life, its a highway of confusion and 'a teenager in love' is more easily hurt than an adult so the final effect: a teeneger in love is a very hurtful thing....how many kids have topped themselves over a romance that went wrong?
