To me, this song is one person to another, telling them how they will always be there for them ("i cannot stay my hand from reaching out so that i can empower you for all eternity") even if they don't ask for it ("although i know ur not begging") and how nothing is so bad that they won't be there for them, because they can put it aside for the other's sake ("i will devour you" (not them but their issue...devour as in destroy, break down) "take all the pain away")...

I've always seen this as a song where the singer (Not david but you get what I'm saying) wants to devour someone's heart and tempt them to crawl in the darkness and run away so that they will easily be haunted and boom-they're gone.
