I think he's talking about the hussle of life all around him. People in such a hurry to be known, or to accomplish things in their life. Everybody wants to be famous. "everybody's got their lives to shout". And he doesn't understand what all that is worth in the end. "I didn't listen when they gave the price". But he is more of a quiet type, while everyone else runs around and he's saying to them that they really don't even know what they're getting in the end either, so why are they acting like they are winning some huge prize. "you'll find there's nothing to hold up to".
