Being depressed has little to do with being sad. Depression is a feeling of hopelessness, helplessness, and guilt coupled with a number of unexplainable fears. Sadness is a logical for of expression of unhappiness or sorrow. In short there is usually a logical reason for someone to feel sad but (clinical) depression is often without reason and is directed towards oneself or one's situation.
