i like your opinions LiveUrLife...this is truly an amazing song, as is pete yorn an amazing songwriter. this song is very important to me, kinda like my theme song...and i like your take on it, but mine is different. take it less literally: its about a girl, yes, but only loosely. More i think its about LIFE. He is on LIFE's side. Its tough and life hurts and he's been fighting with accepting that, but he is now. He is "listening", not just with his ears, but with everything - he is looking at it from all sides, seeing reality and truth. "I am on your side, its taken me a long time...and i listen" Perhaps he is speaking to someone in this song though...asking them "can you listen?" like he does. But overall, listen to the last verse, with that symphonic stuff going on in the background and him saying "i am on your side", i see him outside in the rain after a really bad day with his arms stretched up just saying "its ok". Its a triumphant song...and beautiful.
