I love this song because I think it means that if we only had a memory for the good times and let the rough patches work themselves out and leave then life would be so much more enjoyable. Like she's gonna stay with him forever...but he wishes we only had short term memories or 'half a mind' so that anything unworthy of her could be left in the past so that they could dwell on the future.
