I believe the song is about when Billie Joe's (Green Day's guitarist/singer for those who don't know) girlfriend Adrienne (who is now his wife) moved away and had another boyfriend for a while. The lyrics just fit "i don't know you, but i think i hate you. You're the reason for my misery" etc. It just fits.
