in some magazine john said this song was about loneliness being the cause of insomnia. i think that's totally true, and one of the reasons why i can't sleep at night. it's just the feeling that there's someone out there that i haven't found yet and i'm stuck in bed trying to think about other things so i just stay up and watch the sun rise. i think the ending to 'quiet':

the world awakes and now I am safe
at least by the light of day"
pretty much means tomorrow holds better days. by those lines john was relieved from all those thoughts in his mind and he's ready to live once again.

On nights when I can't sleep, I stare at what looks like the wide open spaces of my room, and I get scared with thoughts of those fears (and other things) in my head that keeps me awake. I know my room is small, but being near sighted makes everything look so far away, and I feel sort of small and scared.
