Natalie is a genius!...A cheer-up song, like she's talking to you to show you that there are persons who understand you, though you might think nobody does. This song is a great consolation for me, when you listen to the song you can imagine her really, that she's talking to YOU though she doesn't know you ("I swear I know your face, I wish I knew your name, I wish I could take you by the hand..."). She feels with you, the pain and fear you have to handle ("I can see that you're hurting", "Believe me, they don't understand that you have the weight of the world today")... And then this: "They thought they could use you Push you down and abuse you And what's so sad is you've decided to hide all your feelings Got more pain than you can deal with but ask yourself, how can this last? " - stunning. She expresses her 'condolences' but at the same time she tells you that you HAVE to go on, not to give up. This comes even more intensive when you listen the end of the song where the fade-out with "They don't understand...they don't understand". Here she wants to make clear to you: well, ok, i admit they don't understand you...but, anyway go on with life...masterpiece

My favorite Natalie Merchant song. :)
