I used to agree with you whole-heartedly however i just had a sudden realization which fits this song much better. Though i would rather believe that this is a love song i think it is actually about someone who has passed away that the person cared about. TWO COINS of YOUR EYES probably means the two coins that they used to place over peoples eyes to keep their lids...

He took the coins and he'll keep these in his pocket along with the memories of her lips and of the loneliness that he now feels without her. So it still could be a love song - but i think it is about a lover who has passed away :( When he is extra lonely all he has to do to "change" that is to reach into his pocket to find the "small change" which reminds him of her.
