This song is about the day Jerry Garcia died. Mike (Like most punks) hates hippies, so he wrote this song because he hates the guy. The real day of his death is the 9th, and Mike screwed up, but yea... you get the idea.
I always thought it was about the Sherron Tate murders done by the Manson family. The Manson family single handed (almost) destroyed the hippie culture-hence the hippie tears...I'm probably wrong though.

@Squall3600 Did you read that somewhere?
Well just Fan Data: But I don't think it's about it! It's about the Events through History, on August 8th; Fat Mike is a Genius, August 8th was the day of the London Treatment to do the followed: Nuremberg Trials! It is also, and I guess must be about it, this song: The day Richard Nixon Resigned in Shame! But you could be right!

I just don't think Grateful Dead to be Hippies; on the contrary; that Psychedellic Movement from the West Coast; like Doors and Jefferson Airplane, and also Grateful Dead and a whole lot of other groups like Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Inventions; they were fed up with the Hippie Movement of Flower Power and fighting against the War that was not going anywhere, and it was pointless their naive ideas, instead "of Living the Good Life Provided by Punk" (as Fat Mike said!)! So they created the Psychedelic Rock, against the New York Hippie Movements and Flower Power, that's the intruduction of the Electric Guitar in it's Greatness! While on the East Coast, they were playing mandolin and sitting in the grass around John Lennon or Dylan before him! No disrespect for neither!
So I don't belive it is about that! But I read your comment and went to do some research! I didn't find anything saying his meaning... And he always have double puns, like Liberal Animation = Anumal Liberation or Punk in Drublic = Drunk in Public...
