i think the song is about what we take for granted. here he is sitting inside a nice warm place, complaining that nothing is on tv, doesn't feel like going out with his friends. and all the while there is a homeless guy who is cold and friendless just down the street. he is saying what right does he have to complain when things could be a lot worse, and putting himself in the homeless guys shoes and wonder how it is "the scale has tipped me fortunate"
