I blasted this song the other day b/c i hadn't listened to it in a LONG time. its awesome as balls =). as for the meaning...i think it means exactly what it says...
peace!
This song means many things on many levels. The Pumpkins were pure genius, and their songs were not just skin deep. The author feels it is extraordinary to be in the position that he is in right now. He was once "ordinary", but his musical success and his spiritual maturity (mostly the latter) make him a great success, and thus extraordinary. The voice in his mind brings doubt, so he fears he is only ordinary. Once he learns that this voice exists, it begins to diminish and his real essence, i.e., power and strength, come...

The girl he loves could be a girl, but I suspect it is a metaphor for his strong inside... the one who controls the voice. Women are much closer to the truth than men, and this is why I think he uses this metaphor.
The world is the world... the place where we all suffer. The children are not children as the world knows them... but rather adults who have not learned "the truth". He must have told friends that he thought he would live forever, a Buddhist and Hindu thought. These "friends" laughed at him because of his beliefs, because they were different than their "standard" Christian-based beliefs. The Christian
mind cannot understand Eastern thought, so he was in many ways alone. However, he knew exactly where he was, he was enlightened, and thus freed from suffering, and understood the meaning of it all (life), and represented by knowing the universe. I said the same things when I was 18. The echo is love is unrequited love. The secrets in your spires is that you identify with your mind (as most people do) and thus your desires, motivation, fear, etc are all very predictable. The emptiness of youth is as it says... kids don't know these things (they are not enlightened), and thus empty, as they rely on their mind for everything, and are thus doomed unless they Break out of the mold, as Buddha and Jesus did. Once you understand these things, the world is yours (drawn into your hands). The infinite vastness of the world (there are double meanings, so be careful) - here it means the universal consciousness that binds all thing is yours to feel (etched upon your heart). The world (now meaning the material world) is hard to understand. It also means that the spiritual world cannot be understood with the thinking mind... it is better felt with the heart. This is the "world" that you cannot live without... the spiritual world which gives you peace. And silence is peace.
All major philosophies point to this... Jewish... Shalom. Islam... Saalam ale kom. Catholic... Peace be with you. Orthodox Christians... Peace Unto You All.
