On some Metallica sites, it says that it's just a song about a warewolf, but I've always thought about it as a metaphor for getting drunk. You start out normal but after a few drinks you change into something different and sometimes you do some awful stuff and when you wake up, you have no idea where you are or what happened.
I've never thought of that, it makes sense now though. I always thought it was about the beast inside all of us, although i do like this song and metallica all together but to call myself a true fan would be wrong

I think this the werewolf is a parallel to hunters and how a hunter feels when he goes out hunting and how he (james) feels different when he is out in the woods almost like he is a different being. this is backed by knowing james is a avid hunter.
