this could just be my own train of thought but i thought that it could be about how most people try so hard to be something that they're not, that they even end up lying to themselves, and forgetting who they really are. Johnny is the one who deep down inside is just awful and nasty, but on the outside pretends to be a "sweet little boy," and rodger is insecure and so feels that he has to overcompensate for that, still believing himself to be a perfect, "sweet little boy".
