I've thought that maybe this is some personal statement that Kate is making about her friends and relations in past. They were never there until the last minute and true friends/lovers would develop a relationship on a 2 way street regardless of what you're going through. Let's not judge on the surface, inside every person there is someone you do not know and by knowing your friends you know yourself better.
