I don't think the story is complicated at all. He comes to a place that meant something to him and his friend who killed himself. He allows himself to imagine what it would be like if his friend was still there, what they could change and how proud he would be of his loved one. The joke he is suffering is playing that game, wishing he could change the past, but he realizes that will bring him nowhere. So with his thoughts still lingering on his friend, he leaves. All there is left to do is keep driving.
