This is probably my favorite song by The Carolines. It's very much in the style of Something's Corporate's slower songs like "Konstantine" and "Ben Franklin's Kite". Here's what I think it means:
There's a girl, who's trying to change him. He tries to change who he is for her, because he's so in love with her, but underneath it all (like every one who tries to be something they're not) he's just himself. In contrast, as he's gotten to know her, he's gotten to know her past. Probably the past, I imagine, before she came to college or something. He sees how she used to be, but how she's tried to change herself, too. This girl is obviously unsecure. Through her insecurities, their relationship falls apart.
