What makes me think this is the references to "Flowers in the Window" and "She's So Strange" at the start of the song - it's as though he goes from having everything sorted out to a state where he doesn't understand what's going on at all. It makes me think that this is a paranoid flight that Fran decides to ride out by writing about it. He takes something small that is bothering him (a feeling that he doesn't know someone as well as he wishes) and amplifies it into a grand piece of pulp fiction.
