I don't necesarily think that that line "alien to us, the spieces known as man" means aliens the way you are thinking of them, ID4 and all. I think it means that we, mankind as it exists today, are the aliens. I don't have all the answers though, and very well might be wrong, but most will probably be cleared up with the release of the Something Wicked concept album in 2005.
I completely agree IEF. There is more to life than just the soft and fluffy that music should reflect and I think Iced Earth does an excellent job of this.
When you think about it, apocalypses are pretty epic and that makes them great for concept albums.
