i think this song is probably about fish. specifically the poor bloke's girlfriend being one. "i know you're different", he laments. damn right, she's a fish. "but i don't care anyways", well, full points for open-mindedness. "i know you're changing"... perhaps into a fish. maybe she's some kind of half-woman half-fish. kinda like jeff goldblum in the fly, except with fish. "and wait until it's gone". perhaps a sombre reminder of her inherent mortality. after all, one hook in the mouth and his girl is gone forever :(
more evidence for the aquatic bent to this song: "i never liked you anyways". ooh, he's fickle. maybe he's only just got wind of the smell. "you know exactly what you have" - gills, and a tiny little mouth. is that such a crime?! "you're happier than ever": denial? or true happiness at the lot of a humble haddock? "i guess we knew all along". well, lets face it, the constant opening and shutting of the mouth was always a dead giveaway.
i could go on, but i think this proves my point. all in all, i'm pleased that emo songwriters have finally got over their somewhat childish preoccupation with failed relationships and broken hearts, and started to deal with the real issues affecting us. this song is only the tip of the iceberg, new songs from rival schools [of fish], dashboard codfish-inal, jimmy eat whelk, and saves the cray[fish] reflect this exciting new trend. i predict it's gonna make a big splash.
