She's An Angel Lyrics
I met someone at the dog show
She was holding my left arm
But everyone was acting normal so I tried to look nonchalant.
We both said, "I really love you,"
The Shriners loaned us cars
We raced up and down the sidewalk twenty thousand million times
Why did they send her over anyone else?
How should I react? These things happen to other people
They don't happen at all, in fact
When you're following an angel
Does it mean you have to throw your body off a building?
Somewhere they're meeting on a pinhead
Calling you an angel, calling you the nicest things
I heard they had a space program
When they sing you can't hear, there's no air
Sometimes I think I kind of like that and
Other times I think I'm already there
Gonna ask for my admission
Gonna speak to the man in charge
The secretary says he's on another line,
Can I hold for a long, long time?
I found out she's an angel
I don't think she knows I know
I'm worried that something might happen to me
If anyone ever finds out
Why, why did they send her over anyone else?
How should I react? These things happen to other people
They don't happen at all
When you're following an angel
Does it mean you have to throw your body off a building?
Somewhere they're meeting on a pinhead
Calling you an angel, calling you the nicest things

I don't think it's about a real angel. I mean, it's all up 2 u, but I think it is a regular love song, but you're thinking of this girl as an angel. Are you good enough for an angel? Do you have to throw ur body off a building? She's so perfect, but you're so not. They're all meeting on a pinhead, talking about whether you are worthy or not. He's just confused, and she's the one, and meeting perfect girls never happens. I leave it to you, but that is what I got.
The version of this song at the end of Gigantic is soooo beautiful and puts the original to shame. I wish I had the Gigantic version on CD. Lovely.
A big favorite of mine. They always seem to do it in their concerts, but they change the arrangement almost every tour. On their live album, they use a tuba for the bass line.
The song lyric is just reflecting on what it would be like to fall in love with a literal angel, rather than a merely metaphorical one like in most love songs.
The "space program" bit is a cute pun, and the idea of zipping around in little shriner cars actually sounds like a pretty fun date.
i agree more with slugsinthefield.. this song is about when you meet your perfect girl and you drive yourself CRAZY trying to be good enough for her... love is a funny thing. i think this song is about him meeting his "perfect girl" and being in total disbelief ("These things happen to other people, They don't happen at all.. in fact.") and also being speachless over her (the space program part)
perfect girls don't exist... but sometimes.. it sure feels that way... doesn't it?
I will admit, this is the song that got me into tmbg, by way of the B. Lee Band, but I really do think they might be giants do the song better. The slow beat and lower energy reflect the questioning and doubting in the song. should you throw your body off a building? this isn't the kind of question you deal with in a hurry and then move on.
It could be just a love song, but it might also have a more literal meaning. Maybe he loved a girl, but then she died, and he's grieving over her.
Just a love song, their BEST song though. My favorite of their's anyhow. It's a shock to the guy, that he'd met someone so perfect. I figure she goes off with her friends, and they discuss him and she tells them how wonderful he is, he goes to meet her parent(s), maybe wants to ask for permission to marry her or something. But they're holding out on it, and he wants to keep get it done, before she vanishes from his life, since things like this " never happen"
The phrase "living on a pinhead" refers to the question, supposedly debated in the Middle Ages, of "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?"
The throwing yourself off a building line could also be a biblical reference to Jesus's temptation by Satan after he was in the desert. The devil asked Jesus to throw himself off the high point of the temple, since angels would come to protect him.
One thing to keep in mind is that TMBG have a very playful nature about them that refuses serious investigation. Is this song about the tragedy of a loved one's death? Maybe a discussion of the tendency to "idealize" a new-found romance? I don't know, but from what I gather, this song is just an interesting situation: the loving of an actual angel and all the implications that are included. Don't take it too seriously guys... I mean their other "hit" is about a night light...
