Might as Well Be on Mars Lyrics
The city streets are wet with rain tonight
Taxi drivers swerve from lane to lane
A lonely guitar man playin' down the hall
Midnight blues comin' through the walls
I tried to call you on the telephone
I left it off the hook
Just to hear it ring
You told me you were better off alone
I never knew that tears could stain
I'm on the roof and I'm starin' at the stars
Lookin' down at all the cars
I can see you
In the window of your favorite corner bar
But to reach you is just too far
And I might as well be on Mars
The city seems so old and grey and beat
It closes in and makes me wanna suffocate
And you just live across the street
But that's a billion miles away
You've turned my world into a dark and lonely place
Like a planet lost in space, my light is fadin'
I'd cross the universe to be right where you are
But I'm right in your backyard
And I might as well be on Mars
CHORUS
I might as well be on Mars
You can't see me
I might as well be the Man on the Moon
You can't hear me
Oh, can you feel me so close
And yet so far
Baby, I might as well be on Mars
Baby, I can't fly
If I could I'd come down to ya
Maybe I should try
I'm on the roof and I'm starin' at the stars
Lookin' down at all lthe cars
I can see you
In the window of your favorite corner bar
But to reach is just too far
And I might as well be on Mars

this song is about how you can be close to someone yet so far away, and unrequited love
new comment after 3 years... I agree with sazbo-19,this song is for sure about being very close to the person you love and yet there is nothing you can do to be with him/her again, like there is an invisible wall between you...now:
"The city streets are wet with rain tonight Taxi drivers swerve from lane to lane A lonely guitar man playin' down the hall Midnight blues comin' through the walls": he describes a picture like he sees it when in a lonely walk trough the city streets and what he sees makes his loneliness unbearable
"I tried to call you on the telephone I left it off the hook Just to hear it ring You told me you were better off alone I never knew that tears could stain" : he tried to contact with her after their relationship was broken but she refused to be with him again
"I'm on the roof and I'm starin' at the stars Lookin' down at all the cars I can see you In the window of your favorite corner bar But to reach you is just too far And I might as well be on Mars" : he finds himself on a roof, watching the sky and the stars.he looks down and realises that his beloved is closer to him than he believed, right in the corner,in her favourite bar.but once more there is nothing he can do to be with her,to go and find her because of the "distance" between them.being so close to her is not very different of him being on Mars, somewhere in space.
"The city seems so old and grey and beat It closes in and makes me wanna suffocate And you just live across the street But that's a billion miles away" : he cannot stand being in this city, there is nothing that attracts his interest anymore.especially because she lives so close to him and he can't stand seeing her without having her.
"You've turned my world into a dark and lonely place Like a planet lost in space, my light is fadin' I'd cross the universe to be right where you are But I'm right in your backyard And I might as well be on Mars" : she led him to a world of loneliness and darkness. He would do anything to be close to her but he is in her backyard and yet he doesn't find the courage to go and find her and to try once more to persuade her to be with him.
"I might as well be on Mars You can't see me I might as well be the Man on the Moon You can't hear me Oh, can you feel me so close And yet so far Baby, I might as well be on Mars" : being on Mars ,of course, is something fictional, just to describe the distance between them.she can't understand how close he really is to her,and the way he describes it(you can't see me,you can't hear me) is like telling she does not care of him, like being completely unaware of his presence.
"Baby, I can't fly If I could I'd come down to ya Maybe I should try" : he lost all his hope,he is tired of trying.and once more he thinks:"maybe I should try".it is a catch22 situation...
I agree with it all appart from the last part about flying. I always thought of it more literlay, like he cannot fly but is going to jump off the building and try (commiting suicide in the process)

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH....such negativity. I give up. I tried. I tried so hard I embarrassed myself with some of my tape song choices, although they do sound quite delicious:D Geesh!

"Baby, I can't fly If I could I'd come down to ya Maybe I should try"
"Baby, I can't fly If I could I'd come down to ya Maybe I should try"
Seems like he'd try to "fly" down to her, and end up killing himself falling off the roof.

this song i can relate to...... but i imadgine 2 people singing it..... someone calling the person who never thought it would hit them hard ["tears could stain"]
were the city is bleak [i think it would be a man singin that one] saying wel... i could see you again
her saying "you turned my world in a dark and lonely place" reasons for why they are seperated
and staring at the stars... finding hope... wishing on a star....
a lost love in hope of regaining..... maybe i should try ....
I do like this song, but it is a bit "Meat Loafy". Also not sure of the musical term...if its a chord or something...but it seemes part of this music is very similar to a Courtney Love song, cannot remember which..but obviously came out after this song...so maybe she sampled a bit.
You're saying it like it's a bad thing. Meat Loaf is incredible, just like Alice Cooper. I'd say he's definitely a very similar artist.

Funny thing is...I saw an old French obscure film in the early 80's. A guy fancied a woman who lived in the apartment across the street. He used to call her and leave the phone hanging and watch her answer it! Now...I bet ALice saw that film too!! this song sounds just like that movie! Tc
Gatsby14 - A bit "Meat Loafy"? I disagree... this song is awesome!
Truly beautiful.
I agree with Jlb1987, this is a beautiful and very moving song. I listened to this when my girlfriend and me separated two years ago (we're back together now) but this song helped me through what was an extremely difficult period emotionally.
"I'm on the roof and I'm starin' at the stars Lookin' down at all the cars"
and then...
"Baby, I can't fly If I could I'd come down to ya Maybe I should try"
"He's on the roof, he sees her on the street, and thinks he can try "flying" down to her. He's sad enough to commit suicide and not even realize it.
I listened to this song a lot when my wife died... she was gone and yet I felt her so close... she was gone and yet... I wanted to be with her and we'll I might have been on mars... or she... when this song played I was always with her. Still am. Although it's over a decade and even longer when she passed away. When I hear this song I am with her...
