Big Log Lyrics
My love is in league with the freeway
It's passion will rise as the cities fly by
And the tail lights dissolve in the coming of night
And the questions and thousands take flight
My love is miles in awaiting
The eyes that just stare and the glance at the clock
In the secret that burns and the pain that won't stop
And it's fueled with the years
Leading me on (leading me on)
Leading me down the road
Driving me on (driving me on)
Driving me down the road
My love is exceedingly vivid
Red eyed and fevered with the hum of the miles
Distance and longing and my thoughts do collide
Should I rest for a while at the side
Your love is cradled in knowing
Eyes in the mirror still expecting the'll come
Sensing too well when the journey is done
There is no turning back
No
There is no turning back
On the run
My love is in league
With the freeway
Oh with the freeway
And the coming of the night time
My love
My love
Is in league with the freeway
It's passion will rise as the cities fly by
And the tail lights dissolve in the coming of night
And the questions and thousands take flight
The eyes that just stare and the glance at the clock
In the secret that burns and the pain that won't stop
And it's fueled with the years
Leading me down the road
Driving me on (driving me on)
Driving me down the road
Red eyed and fevered with the hum of the miles
Distance and longing and my thoughts do collide
Should I rest for a while at the side
Eyes in the mirror still expecting the'll come
Sensing too well when the journey is done
There is no turning back
No
There is no turning back
With the freeway
Oh with the freeway
And the coming of the night time
My love
My love
Is in league with the freeway

This song speaks to the long, dark, desolate stretches between loves. Beyond the bleakness is acceptance, where the resolutness of leaving (on the run, fueled by secrets and hurts and thousands of unanswerable questions) merges with, and is indistinguishable from, the wide, open-ended quest(longing that does not rest) for new love.
I like to think some details call out to people the author has loved in ways only they would recognize.

Taking the mention of Freeway and equating it to a path to the devil is a bit of a stretch... I;m not sure that the song meaning is but it's more likely comparing Love or Loves with a journey... I also question weather "the journey is done" signifies "A Call to Death" It could be the end of a relationship... It could be end of a long bowel movement... who knows... I respect your opinion 10west but Man you have some Dark Thoughts...
Plant's lyrics were often influenced by the books of J.R.R. Tolkien. Big Log is a mythical, extended metaphor for a lost love: "My love is in league with the freeway... My love is the miles and the waiting." A Big Log is common lingo of tractor trailer drivers. It is the book in which their road hours are logged, therefore the connection between the road and love and the countless hours we all log on both.
It seems to be about either lost or unrequited love. If you have been on a 500-mile drive, you know the physical feeling of road fatigue, which he captures so well here. I love the long road trip metaphor that he uses for weariness in love. His voice and the music is so haunting and penetrating too.
Not really sure what the song is about, but love it anyway!
Maybe he's driving a big log truck? Or he hit someone on the head with a big log? That could be a secret and a reason to run away. His woman staying at home, expecting 'them' to come. Vagueness...
one of my favorite videos... it's rare to find a video that actually might have some depth to it nowadays... the whole strutting in front of whores with your bling gets old FAST, they just don't make'em like they used to...
I think he was talking about his career, his love of music. Big Log is his life's chronicle or journal. His musical career and passion for music are what's keeping him on the road. And he's contemplating on resting for a while from touring and decide whether he should continue or retire from music altogether. I feel that his wife (Your love is cradled in knowing...) is part of this big decision "sensing too well when the journey is done there is no turning back".
I listened to this because I was in the mood for it, but the melody was so trite that it failed to garner my interest. The words seemed to devour any last bit of hope from my bones, and left me shriveled like someone who's awaiting a cause. I didn't feel in league with a freeway, highway or bypass, though that's all I could do with this tune, ie: bypass it. What it's about is anyone's guess, but like D'yer Mak'er, it's forced nature leaves a bad taste on my flesh.
