Shut Down Lyrics
Tach it up, tach it up
Buddy gonna shut you down
It happened on the strip where the road is wide
(Oooo rev it up now)
Two cool shorts standin' side by side
(Oooo rev it up now)
Yeah, my fuel injected Stingray and a four-thirteen
(Oooo rev it up now)
Revvin' up our engines and it sounds real mean
(Oooo rev it up now)
Tach it up, tach it up, tach it up
Buddy gonna shut you down
Declinin' numbers at an even rate
(Oooo movin' out now)
At the count of one we both accelerate
(Oooo movin' out now)
My Stingray is light the slicks are startin' to spin
(Oooo movin' out now)
But the four-thirteen's really diggin' in
(Oooo movin' out now)
Gotta be cool now power shift here we go
Superstock Dart is windin' out in low
But my fuel injected Stingray's really startin' to go
To get the traction I'm ridin' the clutch
My pressure plate's burnin' that machine's too much
Pedal's to the floor hear the dual quads drink
(Oooo pump it up now)
And now the four-thirteen's lead is startin' to shrink
(Oooo pump it up now)
He's hot with ram induction but it's understood
(Oooo pump it up now)
I got a fuel injected engine sittin' under my hood
(Oooo pump it up now)
Shut it off, shut it off buddy now I shut you down
Shut it off, shut it off buddy now I shut you down
Shut it off, shut it off buddy now I shut you down
Shut it off, shut it off buddy now I shut you down

The chord changes on the last two lines of each verse (gotta be cool now powershift here we go) were, with the exception of Burt Bacharach's genius, the coolest and most innovative thing on the charts at the time. These songs "Little Deuce Coupe", "409" and "Shut Down" were indicative of the wave of car culture spreading throughout the country at the time, and for decades since. Mike's great lead and Christian's masculine vocal were the perfect vehicle (NPI) for Brian's work.
Car and Driver magazine reenacted this song. They ran an identical Vette against a Dart. In the 60's the Big 3 offered their compacts with big V8's, tires, brakes, roll bars, etc. You could get a firebreather that looked like your Mom's 6 banger. The discerning eye could tell the diff. The Dart, with factory equipment, beat the Vette.
A Sting Ray Corvette!
Can anybody tell me what it is to 'Shut Down'? Being a 46 year old English man who was born on the north side of 1967 and who's only knowledge of the height of custom car cool is to either lower a car, put flames up the side or to stick a UV light under the bottom.......Is Shutting down when hot rodsters raise and lower there cars on the hydraulic suspension to show off?
@BarnabyHughes Shutting down is not something someone would do to themselves, being "Shut Down" is drag racing slang for getting beat badly. "Now I shut you down", conversely means that I beat you in the race. Most people misunderstand the lyrics as "The Super Stock Dodge is winding out in low", but the actual lyrics are, "The Super Stock DART is winding out in low". In the song it's mentioned that "My Stingray's wide, the slicks are starting to spin", that means he lost traction.

Now in my humble opinion,...
Now in my humble opinion, in a drag race between a 1963 Fuelie Stingray and a 1963 Super Stock Dart, the cars are pretty evenly matched, so typically it comes down to driver skill. The only advantage the Stingray had was that it had slicks to improve it's traction...however as soon as the slicks started to spin, the race was over the Dart pulled a half of a car length and banning any other errors that's how the race ended. The Dart wins with a 13:44 second 1/4 mile time, while the Stingray ran a 14:01 because of the tire spin.
@BarnabyHughes Shutting down IS something someone would do to themselves if they were badly beaten in order to save wear and tear on the engine.
