The Music Of The Night Lyrics

Nighttime sharpens, heightens each sensation
Darkness stirs and wakes imagination
Silently the senses abandon their defences

Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendour
Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender
Turn your face away from the garish light of day
Turn your face away from cold, unfeeling light
And listen to the music of the night

Close you eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar
And you'll live as you've never lived before

Softly, deftly, music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it, secretly possess you
Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness which you know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night

Let your mind start a journey through a strange, new world
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
Let your soul take you where you long to go
Only then can you belong to me

Floating, falling, sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me, savour each sensation
Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in
To the harmony which dreams alone can write
The power of the music of the night

You alone can make my song take flight
Help me make the music of the night

This song is beautiful. One of the very few love songs that never becomes corny or cheap. I read somewhere that it was Andrews love song to Sarah Brightman, the original Christine and his wife either at the time or soon after.

The Phantom is, literally, telling Christine to open up her mind. Christine is your average 19th century girl. She is faced with the option of choosing Raoul, a good-looking, kind hearted man, or the Phantom. The Phantom is a freak-genius who dwells under the opera house with no place in society; where as Raoul seems to come from either middle or high social class. Raoul is just about the ideal 19th century lover. The Phantom is telling Christine to open her mind and forget everything she's been told or taught about the world/society and that she'll be able to live freely. If she is able to give all of that away, she could be happy with Phantom. However, in the end Christine goes with what she's told and picks Raoul. The reason why I feel this way is because, in the movie at least, several times Christine seems enchanted and speechless, in a complete state of awe by the Phantom. Not once does she experience this passion with Raoul, yet she finds him to be the better pick, hinting that it must be some sort of societal influence (along with the fact that the Phantom starts killing people, of course).

I love this song so much. It is positively the most gorgeous thing to listen to with earphones and eyes closed. There are different versions of it, depending on cast of the musical and what country it's performed in...but wichever one I listen to, it never fails to touch me every time. Especially since I'm a die-hard fan of opera, and the Phantom musical itself. Truly one of the most beautiful songs I know.

this song is apart of my favourite part of the movie.... i love from the mirror part, where the phantom takes christine down to the dungeon area for the first time, up till when she takes the mask off really..

I've only seen the 2004 movie with Butler's voice and man... he makes me want to be his lover, especially with this song. I would so succumb to him and his music if I were Catherine. XD
