Brilliant song, deservedly a classic. Darby's talking about how there are many different forms of government and none of them truly benefit those they represent.

best song ever. i love darby crash. i saw red hot chili peppers live and they covered this song, it was THE BEST THING EVER.

this song is widely regarded as the first single to come out of the L.A. punk scene. sad that it only has five comments while shit like Plain White T's has hundreds.

Darby Crash was the man! Sid vicious, wishes he could be half of what Darby was! The Germs don't get enough recognition...so under-rated!

the last line of the 4th verse should be "Deprivation- we are suns"

its an illusion to kings and emperors referring to themselves as the "light." This is in special reference to the shah of iran and louis xiv of france. one of the shah's titles was "the light of the aryans", and louis referred to himself as "the sun king."

during the time the song was written the shah was an american puppet and there were increasingly widespread protests and acts of civil disobedience against him being violently suppressed by the shah's secret police. darby was very sympathetic with the anti-shah movement because he saw it as a democratic people's movement. he died before it became what it did.

Darby was a tragic genius, no one can honestly deny his talent when it stairs at you in the face.

I think this is the only Germs song I've heard where I can almost understand what Darby Crash is saying. Haha. Whatever. The Germs are just amazing.
