The Germs – Communist Eyes Lyrics 16 years ago
Darby was a social anarchist like joe strummer from the clash, johnny rotten from the sex pistols and a bunch of other early punks. the reality of the failure of the soviet union was apparent to everyone, but american capitalism trapples on human rights too, so they all felt alienated. they wanted socialism without a government, where people are free to actually live in equality with no one above anyone else.

The Germs – Forming Lyrics 16 years ago
the last line of the 4th verse should be "Deprivation- we are suns"

its an illusion to kings and emperors referring to themselves as the "light." This is in special reference to the shah of iran and louis xiv of france. one of the shah's titles was "the light of the aryans", and louis referred to himself as "the sun king."

during the time the song was written the shah was an american puppet and there were increasingly widespread protests and acts of civil disobedience against him being violently suppressed by the shah's secret police. darby was very sympathetic with the anti-shah movement because he saw it as a democratic people's movement. he died before it became what it did.

Darby was a tragic genius, no one can honestly deny his talent when it stairs at you in the face.

Dead Kennedys – I Fought The Law Lyrics 17 years ago
there is another correction, Dan White did not serve the full seven years of his sentence. he was paroled after five. the dead kennedys were greatly inspired by the revolutionary ideas of the gay liberation movement of the 70s which turned into the reformist ideas of the modern gay rights movement.

Sex Pistols – My Way Lyrics 17 years ago
Some people have overlooked a couple important things to consider in this discussion. First, punk rock is not about how talented you are. It is completely against "talent" being a barrier to anyone's individual participation. That was why the sex pistols played only a few chords a song, cause anyone was supposed to be able to do it, and they were just ordinary people like everyone else. Johnny Rotten would talk at length about how the sex pistols were nothing like the Beatles or the Rolling Stones or any other band that wanted to be famous and have people worship them. The sex pistols were about ordinary people doing something for themselves. that was a major part of Johnny Rotten's personal ideology (and like someone mentioned above, the sex pistols were johnny's personal vision that Malcolm just provided the space to create).

Second, Sid cultivated his reputation. Few people understand how smart Sid was. He may have made some stupid decisions (like doing heroin or getting involved with nancy), but every other smart person in history has made some stupid choices too. Sid would act up around media and cameras because he knew he had a reputation to maintain and cultivate. There are many interviews with journalists talking about how Sid would be doing something normally until he realized he was being photographed, then he would do something outrageous and spontaneous so that he could provoke a shock, and have all music journalists writing and talking about him and the sex pistols. The interviews with Sid in The Filth and the Fury, particularly the one in Hyde Park, show just how smart, witty, and funny Sid was. He knew what he was doing, and he had a plan all along.

The sex pistols entire image and reputation was highly cultivated to shock mainstream opinion and unsettle the establishment. They did it not for commercial success (only malcolm would say this later, as he tried to rewrite the history making himself out to be the mastermind), the sex pistols were never commercially successful in any real way while they were together anyway. Its bad marketing to tell your audience to fuck off and that you are completely uninterested in them or their money. Johnny's goal with the sex pistols was much more artistic, he wanted to use a band and music to critique British society as he saw it. Johnny wanted to critique the shallow consumerist ideal of late 70s British society through an artistic violent assault on the accepted aesthetic norms of fashion, music, and public behavior. This is why punks came to wear tattered clothing, avoid musical theory, and create a DIY sub-culture independent of capitalist big bussiness and their obcession with profits. though the pistols might never have been signed to an indie label, there were none when they formed, and there would be none without them.

This song is awesome, Paul Anka (the guy who wrote it) always said Sid's was his favorite version.

The Living End – Roll On Lyrics 17 years ago
The Living End are definitely pro-union, they dedicated this song to striking electricians when they played in DC 4 years ago. The end of the song is about how the company will treat you if the union looses. the last verse is the company saying that they will fire the workers because they are expendable and replacable, just like cogs in a machine, if they dont go back to work and then the chorus is the union rebutting, saying "we'll roll on with our heads held high"-in other words, the struggle will continue.

Leftover Crack – So You Wanna Be A Cop? Lyrics 17 years ago
there is alot of ignorance in these posts. all people, even cops, are capable of being assholes to some people and nice to others. LOC is singing about the institutional role cops play in society, which is to serve as the violent enforcers of capitalist rule (a recurring theme in CRS7 music). grow up everyone, youre embarrassing yourselves.

M.I.A. – Paper Planes Lyrics 17 years ago
this song is wonderful. it glorifies gang life because gang life is the only way the majority of immigrants can improve their standards of living, but it comes with a cost, which she is clearly implying. if you read her interviews she clearly explains it all. she doesn't want gangs to be the only way to get a better life (however brief) but this song is describing what is, and the zest for life many she perceives gang members have while alive. she is not approving of their actions, but she also knows they are not the only source of violence, and a small one when compared to police, the military, or government.
