Puttin' It Down Lyrics
Big pain
Burning out
Giving me
A cow
What you seem to be saying is you're patiently waiting like an ashtray... for the butt
Well I'm puttin' it down, but you're not picking it up
Well I'm puttin' it down, but you treat me like a clown & I don't want to be funny
Fat chance
Glued to the wall
Like a center fold
Of an old cannon ball
Will you put me inside your TV tonight cause you're treating me like a rerun
CHORUS
So what
I lost my job
At the hut
My ass got cut
But I'll be better at kissin' when my teeth are all missing & the silverware's burning & I'm eatin' with my fingers
CHORUS
Burning out
Giving me
A cow
What you seem to be saying is you're patiently waiting like an ashtray... for the butt
Well I'm puttin' it down, but you treat me like a clown & I don't want to be funny
Glued to the wall
Like a center fold
Of an old cannon ball
Will you put me inside your TV tonight cause you're treating me like a rerun
I lost my job
At the hut
My ass got cut
But I'll be better at kissin' when my teeth are all missing & the silverware's burning & I'm eatin' with my fingers

I think this song is about someone who feels rejected. They're laying down how they feel about someone (puttin' it down), but their efforts aren't apppreciated (you treat me like a clown).
Yeah, I definitely agree. There's also this sense of bitterness with the:
but I'll be better at kissin' when my teeth are all missin' and the silverware's burnt and I'm eatin' with my fingers
like he thinks she'll regret giving up on him when they're both old and she's gone from his life. He's probably falling apart because of the rejection, losing his job, burning his silverware, etc.
I don't think that this is about a girl or anything. I think that this is about how hard it was for Beck to start up his career. Job after low wage job, he was frustrated.
"I'm puttin it down But you treat me like a clown And I don't want to be funny"
That part ^ is my favorite. It's so serious and easy to relate to. No one likes to be not taken seriously.
I think this is about how Beck's music is sometimes perceived to be very funny. His lyrics are goofy and strange. Especially with his early stuff, it was great! But at the time, maybe not alot of people understood. They just laughed him off. And he didn't want to be funny. He loved music and wanted a serious music career, but no one was picking it up!
Also, when he says he's being treated like a re-run. He is so unique and original. Maybe someone told him his music wasn't all that special. But to him, he made an effort to be real and unique.
